A survey respondent emailed me with this question:
“question 6 seemed to have no ‘other’ option – I felt that {ORGANIZATION} was a little naive in that area-
Here is my answer:
I tend to rank Short Term Missions trips to a scale (complete the survey to find out what that means). For the longest time I saw some types of mission trips as weak and ineffectual, but the longer I am in this, i see just how many people I respect in Missions, often actually began with really terrible missions. The first lousy experiences inspired them onward, and now they are participating in better mission.
Additionally, I recognize that what I know now, is much better than what I knew even 5 years ago, in fact I would not teach some stuff that I taught 5 years ago! Does that mean that I should not engage today, because I realize that in another 5 years I will also grow in my understanding at this stage?
Each of the variety of trips should not be compared to other expressions of mission – the objectives and purposes are different, the qualifications are different, the leaders ability is different, the list goes on and on. Each trip often works fairly well for the people that join the experience – not perfectly, often shakily – but often inspirationally (if only to do things better!).
There needs to be many streams into mission, even ones that I do not particularly enjoy, so long as we are all willing to grow and learn …
Give me some feedback when you check out your own results …
