thats me … the blog slacker.
it has been a very busy time, finishing putting together the policy manual for Westside Kings Church on how they are engaging the world. Bringing light to darkness, feeding the hungry, providing water to the thirsty.
At the same time, i have been finishing a video project with 2 Calgary schools for CAUSE Canada. I am working with groups of students and through an experiential learning module using giant puppets we are looking at the fact and fiction, the bias and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. The kids have been great! I just finished working with 50 grade 7 kids and they put the whole thing together themselves.
on the 10th of november I take off for Sierra Leone and begin the process there. When I return I will show the Canadian kids the Sierra Leone views. should be incredible!
My brother just returned to Canada from language learning in Costa Rica, he brought his girlfriend Mary home with him. As Mary is Korean American, My wife Supriya and I thought that we should greet her in Korean. (her english is natural, as she was brought up in America) … We just thought that it would be fun to poke fun at the very common detail that she frequently deals with.
After looking at her, “Wow, your english is great”
Her response … “So is yours!”
Anyways click through to check out how to say hello, or “Do you speak English?” in over 325 languages …
The laptop for the world’s children should be durable and self-reliant |
Nicholas Negroponte, chairman and founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Labs, has been outlining designs for a sub-$100 PC.
The laptop will be tough and foldable in different ways, with a hand crank for when there is no power supply.
Professor Negroponte came up with the idea for a cheap computer for all after visiting a Cambodian village.

The ‘Wild honey” Christian Community, is part of a larger trend (think progression, not trendy) in developing authentic, in and out-focused true community.
The New Monasticism
A fresh crop of Christian communities is blossoming in blighted urban settings all over America.

“How can you worship a homeless Man on Sunday and ignore one on Monday?” said the sign outside St. Edward’s Cathedral in Philadelphia. Inside, a group of 40 homeless families were joined by students from Eastern University to protest the eviction of women and their children from the abandoned Kensington neighborhood church. In 1996, the story was all over the news as a community activist group and a crowd of Eastern students fought the eviction by living in the church, sleeping on pews, and worshiping each Sunday. Shane Claiborne and other students left Eastern’s campus in St. Davids, drove the 20 miles into Philly, and unpacked their things in the nave.
At first, it was a shock to live among the homeless, Claiborne says. But face to face with poverty, stereotypes quickly broke down. During those fall days, as the stone building grew colder each night, the students began to rethink Gospel passages about the poor being blessed and doing “unto the least of these.”

“Think fractal. Think B2C. Think cross-platform. But don’t think all three at the same time.â€
And,
“We will widen our capacity to brand without depreciating our capability to embrace. The metrics factor can be summed up in one word: revolutionary. Think cyber-transparent.â€

why? … well if Jesus is CEO, I better learn to talk the talk.
I came across an advertisement in one of those free community magazines the other day … you know the ones. Replete with Mind/Body/Spirit articles, the first few pages full of advertisements for Tarot card reading, past life regression therapy and articles on success and semi-Buddhist philosophy. The typical magazine full of thoughts for the spiritual seeker.
About half-way through I found a great picture, underneath, the text of the ad said something about connecting to Spirit, through Communiy and Communion. This community was known as wild honey. It sounded like something I had once heard, so I checked out the website. I am sure they get a far bit of flack, but I love how this Christian community is opening itself up to truly communicate with like-minded people. Allowing the expressions of spiritality to bring people into a walk with our eternal God.
It is different and that is very good!
